During an emotional contest, held at the Center of Fine Arts of Santurce, which represented the re-birth of Puerto Rico, a year after Hurricane Maria devastated the island, Kiara Ortega, representing Rincon, was crowned the new Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2018.
29 beautiful women competed for the title. Alexandra Porrata, representing Ponce placed first runner up.
The event, broadcast live by WAPA TV, WAPA America and Televisión Dominicana, began with a colorful stage, which bore witness to the slogan #LaBellezaRenace, with images of a Puerto Rico full of greenery, accompanied by the renowned theme “Hijos del cañaveral”, from the singer René Pérez.
This contrasted with the participation of the Cepeda brothers, who played and danced the theme, while the 29 candidates paraded in short white suits, from which they took off part of the attire to transform them into colorful long dresses designed by Jaer Cabán, as if they were of the bud that was blooming.
Undoubtedly, one of the most impressive moments of the opening was when images were projected of the triumph of our four Miss Universe, Deborah Carthy-Deu, Dayanara Torres, Denise Quiñones and Zuleyka Rivera, who surprised the audience after being together for the first time on the same stage.
Ortega will compete this December at the 2018 Miss Universe Pageant in Thailand.
